A Ramble Through Central Florida: Brunch, a Spring, and Marcus King in Apopka

A leisurely day in Central Florida took us from brunch in Winter Park to Wekiwa Springs and an evening with Marcus King at the Apopka Amphitheater. Good food, good company, and good music.

Some days on the road don't need a grand itinerary to be memorable. A good meal, a swim in a spring, drinks with friends, and live music on a warm Florida evening can be more than enough.

Our latest ramble through Central Florida started with brunch in Winter Park, continued with an afternoon at Wekiwa Springs, and wrapped up with Marcus King and his band at the Apopka Amphitheater. Nothing overly ambitious—just a pleasant day spent enjoying some of the things the region does particularly well.

Brunch at The Ravenous Pig

We started the day at The Ravenous Pig on Fairbanks Avenue in Winter Park. The longtime gastropub has become something of a local institution, and once again it delivered a solid meal.

Our table shared the pastry board before moving on to a duck confit omelette and a porchetta baguette sandwich. Rich, savory, and satisfying, it was exactly the sort of brunch that leaves you feeling ready for whatever the rest of the day has in store.

With a full stomach and no real schedule to rush, we pointed ourselves northwest toward our next stop.

An Afternoon at Wekiwa Springs

The middle portion of the day was spent cooling off at nearby Wekiwa Springs. The clear water and shady surroundings offered a welcome break from the summer heat and provided a nice contrast to the busier parts of the day.

We'll cover our visit to the springs in more detail in a separate article.

After a few hours of swimming and relaxing, it was time to meet up with a friend and begin the evening portion of our adventure.

Margaritas Before the Music

Before heading to the concert, we stopped at Cielito Lindo Mexican Grill for drinks and dinner.

The colorful interior, friendly staff, and lively atmosphere made it an easy place to settle in for a while. We sampled a couple of their more elaborate margaritas—one featuring a Patron floater and another topped with an upside-down Coronita.

Alongside the drinks came plenty of food: chips and salsa, fajitas, tacos, and a burrito. By the time we finished, nobody was leaving hungry.

Marcus King at the Apopka Amphitheater

It was one of those classic Central Florida evenings—warm, humid, and mostly overcast, with the moon occasionally peeking through breaks in the clouds. The weather felt well suited to Marcus King's blend of Southern rock, blues, soul, country, and funk.

The Apopka Amphitheater turned out to be a comfortable venue for a summer concert. A covered seating section sits near the stage while a grassy lawn rises up the hill behind it, giving concertgoers plenty of room to spread out. There really isn't a bad view of the stage, and in hindsight we probably could have skipped the seats altogether and enjoyed the show from the lawn with a couple of folding chairs.

The venue also featured a variety of food and beverage vendors. One barbecue stand seemed especially popular, with the smell of smoked brisket and other meats drifting through the crowd. Had we not just finished a sizable Mexican dinner, I could have easily been persuaded to join the line.

A few practical notes for anyone attending a show here:

  • Expect a fairly long security line before entering the concert area.
  • Reserved seating requires a wristband, something that wasn't immediately obvious when we arrived.
  • If you're sensitive to loud music, consider bringing earplugs. The sound system was definitely getting a workout that evening.

A Strong Finish to the Day

The band put on an excellent show. Marcus King's guitar work and vocals were as strong as advertised, and the crowd was fully engaged by the end of the set.

When they returned for an encore and launched into The Allman Brothers Band's "Ramblin' Man," it felt like a fitting way to close out the evening. By that point the audience was more than ready to sing along, and the performance sent everyone home on a high note.

As we made our way back through the parking lot, the mood was much the same as it had been throughout the day: relaxed, satisfied, and glad we'd made the trip. It wasn't some epic adventure or once-in-a-lifetime experience—just a genuinely enjoyable day spent wandering around Central Florida, eating well, catching up with friends, and listening to good music.

Sometimes that's exactly what you're looking for.
